THE Commission on Population and Development (CPD) urged Filipino parents to practice “digital parenting” following the school shooting in Tacloban City.

Parents should monitor their children’s online activities as part of their responsibility, the CPD said in a report by The Philippine Star.

CPD executive director Lisa Grace Bersales said parents should teach their children to engage respectfully online and consume digital content responsibly, emphasizing their role in promoting responsible digital citizenship among minors.

“In today’s interconnected world, digital parenting has become an essential component of responsible parenthood,” she said.

The CPD also warned parents to watch for changes in their children’s behavior and urged them to remain emotionally present and maintain open communication.

The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) said it is working with social media platforms, particularly Facebook, to limit the circulation of videos showing school violence in Tacloban and Cavite.

However, the CICC said it would preserve the data to hold those who posted the videos accountable.

Meanwhile, Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla described the recent shooting incident as a result of weaknesses in Republic Act No. 9344, or the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act, and the Republic Act No. 10591, or the Comprehensive Law on Firearms and Ammunition, saying Congress should visit both laws.

“I would strongly recommend to Congress that we work together to come up with a more comprehensive law on juvenile justice,” he said.(Marry Ann Aquilla, UP Cebu Comm Intern
