A WHEELCHAIR-bound Thomas Markle appeared before a US federal court following his arrest over alleged possession of child sexual abuse material.

The 82-year-old father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, attended a 30-minute hearing in Florida, where federal prosecutor Courtenay Derry outlined the charge, according to CBS News.

Escorted by two US Marshals, Markle was ordered to remain under home detention at his assisted living facility, subject to electronic monitoring.

No plea was entered. A date for his arraignment in California will be determined later, according to a joint statement from the US Department of Justice (DoJ) and the US Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California.

Markle faces one count of possessing indecent images of children following an FBI investigation into two storage units he rented in the Los Angeles area since 2008.

Agents seized approximately 78 items, including film negatives, photographic slides and books, which allegedly contained child sexual abuse material. Investigators said witnesses had “positively identified” Markle in two images believed to depict abuse.

The man pictured appeared to be in his 30s or 40s, suggesting the images could date back several decades, according to investigators.

Markle has previously denied possessing such material, describing the allegations as “sick lies”.

FBI Director Kash Patel said authorities acted swiftly, accusing Markle of targeting children through his alleged criminal conduct. He also pledged that the agency would use all available resources to protect children and pursue offenders.

“Mr Markle allegedly targeted innocent children and sought to steal their innocence through his criminal actions,” Patel said in a BBC report.

The investigation has also extended to the Philippines, where police last month obtained a warrant to examine devices and other items allegedly removed from Markle’s former residence. Four boxes containing computers, phones, hard drives and videotapes were handed to officers by his son, Thomas Markle Jr.

Markle Sr. moved to the Philippines last year following a series of strokes and lived in Cebu until May. He reportedly relocated to a Florida rehabilitation facility after having his leg amputated.

Meanwhile, London’s Metropolitan Police confirmed in October that it had received a 2019 letter containing allegations concerning Markle. Information relating to matters outside the UK was passed to the Sussexes’ office but not to other law enforcement agencies. The force has since referred its handling of the letter to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

Meghan expressed distress over the allegations and concern for any children who may have been harmed.

“I am deeply distressed at the news that has come to light in the last 24 hours, and my thoughts are with any children who may have been harmed,” she said in the same report.

Meghan has been estranged from her father since 2018.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have not publicly commented on his arrest.(MyTVCebu)
