FORMER South Korean Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun attempted to take his own life while in custody on Tuesday, according to the head of the Korea Correctional Service.
Per a report by CNN, Kim, detained on Sunday for his alleged role in recommending martial law, was reportedly found in a bathroom by corrections officers who intervened before he could harm himself.
He was transferred to an isolation room and is said to be in stable condition.
This incident came amid a political storm triggered by President Yoon Suk Yeol’s brief but controversial declaration of martial law on December 3.
The decree, which aimed to curb opposition lawmakers’ activities, led to widespread public outrage and intense political fallout.
Within hours, lawmakers forced their way into the National Assembly, overturning the martial law order.
Despite its swift reversal, the crisis continues to escalate.
President Yoon is now under investigation for possible insurrection, with prosecutors barring him from leaving the country.
His approval rating has plummeted, and opposition lawmakers are pushing for his impeachment.
A new motion is expected to be voted on as early as Saturday.
Yoon’s ruling People Power Party survived an impeachment vote last weekend, but party leaders, including Han Dong-hoon, have called for the president’s resignation.
Kim, who resigned as defense minister on Thursday, has taken responsibility for the martial law decision, stating that all military actions related to the decree were carried out under his orders.
Meanwhile, three top military commanders have been suspended, and police have expanded their investigation into Yoon and his administration, including treason allegations.
The political crisis has intensified, with lawmakers approving a special council to investigate whether Yoon abused his power in issuing the martial law order.(CMM)
