SIX Philippine universities were included in the 2024 Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings, with Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) and the University of the Philippines (UP) tied as the country’s top-performing institutions.
Both universities placed in the 501–600 bracket. ADMU’s rank dropped from the 401–500 bracket last year and 84th overall in Asia in 2023. UP retained its previous standing, marking its return as a top-ranked university in the country since 2022.
UP first joined the THE Asia rankings in 2017 in the 201–250 bracket and remained in the Top 100 from 2019 to 2022. Its ranking declined in recent years.
De La Salle University (DLSU), Mapua University, Mindanao State University–Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-Iligan), and the University of Santo Tomas (UST) were placed in the 601+ bracket, making them the second-highest ranked universities in the country.
This is MSU-Iligan’s first time in the rankings, after being listed under “Reporter” status in 2023. THE defines “Reporter” institutions as those that submitted data but did not meet eligibility requirements for a rank.
DLSU dropped from its 501–600 placement last year, while Mapua and UST remained in the same bracket.
Eight institutions were listed as reporters for the first time this year: De La Salle–College of St. Benilde, Lyceum Northwestern University, Manila Central University, National University, Philippine State College of Aeronautics, Quezon City University, St. Louis University, and University of the Immaculate Conception.
They joined five returning reporters: Cebu Technological University, Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology, University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines, Tarlac Agricultural University, Visayas State University, University of Eastern Philippines, and Central Luzon State University.
A total of 853 universities from 35 Asian countries were assessed in this year’s edition.
THE rankings are based on five performance indicators: teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook, and industry engagement.
While both ADMU and UP placed in the same bracket, Ateneo performed better in teaching and research quality, while UP ranked higher in industry income and research environment. UST received the highest score among Philippine schools in terms of international outlook.(MyTVCebu)
