Zhang Zhen wraps up Cebu tour with ‘stronger China-Visayas partnerships’

CHINESE Consul General Zhang Zhen concluded more than three years of diplomatic service in Cebu, highlighting strengthened ties with local governments, expanded community partnerships, and increased cooperation involving Chinese businesses and the Filipino-Chinese community.

Zhang, who began her assignment in Cebu in April 2023, marked her departure during a September 11 reception celebrating the 77th National Day of the People’s Republic of China.

In her farewell remarks, Zhang recalled the partnerships formed during her three years and five months in the region, particularly efforts that brought China-Philippines relations closer to local communities.

She cited assistance extended to schools and families in need within the Consulate General’s jurisdiction, as well as relief efforts following disasters, including the distribution of food, water and other supplies.

Among the Consulate’s recent initiatives were a rice donation supporting the Cebu Provincial Government’s Zero Hunger Initiative and the provision of electric waste-collection vehicles for barangays and the Cebu City Market.

Zhang also highlighted growing cooperation between Cebu and Chinese provinces and cities. Fujian and Guangxi, she said, have continued exchanges with Cebu through donations, firefighting training, official visits and participation in regional and international activities.

These programs, she noted, have helped strengthen community connections and support local welfare.

Chinese companies operating in the Philippines were also recognized for contributing to the local economy while undertaking social-responsibility programs.

Zhang cited the Chinese Enterprises Philippines Association and its Cebu chapter for supporting public schools and helping communities affected by disasters.

She also praised the Filipino-Chinese community for its continuing role in business, education, charity and community development, calling the group an important link between the Filipino and Chinese peoples.

Cebu leaders likewise acknowledged Zhang’s contribution.

Cebu Gov. Pamela Baricuatro thanked her for fostering relationships and for standing with Cebu during difficult periods.

Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival said Zhang helped advance cooperation and understanding between Cebu and China.

Mandaue City Mayor Jonkie Ouano recognized the Chinese-Filipino community’s contribution to trade and enterprise, while Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Cindi King-Chan cited tourism, business, culture and education as important avenues for sustained cooperation.

Zhang also addressed the broader China-Philippines relationship, saying stable bilateral ties remain important to both countries despite present challenges.

She expressed confidence that continued dialogue and cooperation could help bring relations back toward a more stable path.

“I have every confidence that with the wisdom and persistence of far-sighted peoples on both sides, we will navigate through the dark waters. With joint efforts, we will restore our relationship back onto the right track of sound and steady development,” she said.

She thanked local officials, business leaders, community organizations, the Filipino-Chinese community, fellow diplomats and her colleagues at the Consulate for their support throughout her Cebu assignment.(MyTVCebu)
