USJ-R hands Benedicto first loss; Ateneo stays unbeaten

THE University of the San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars conquered an erstwhile unbeaten opponent while the Ateneo de Cebu-Sacred Heart School Magis Eagles kept their unbeaten record intact in the basketball tournament of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Season 26 on Thursday night, Sept. 24, at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Jaguars eked out a 62-60 overtime win over the Benedicto College (BC) Cheetahs in the collegiate division action while the Magis Eagles made it a double whammy for BC after they downed the Baby Cheetahs, 70-56, in the secondary competition.

USJ-R improved to 2-3 (win-loss) while BC dropped to 4-1, creating a three-way tie at the No. 1 spot as the University of San Carlos Warriors and University of Cebu-Main Webmasters also hold 4-1 records.

Kenneth Calvin Cole and Christian Carl Sollano led the Jaguars’ impressive win with 16 and 13 points, respectively.

Den Rick Orgong led the Cheetahs with 13 points, Serge Gabines added 12 points, and John Carlo Sabroso had 11.

On the other hand, the Magis Eagles earned a piece of the lead in the team standings by tallying their third victory in as many games that resulted in a three-way logjam atop the standings.

Also parading 3-0 cards are the University of Cebu-Lapu-Lapu/Mandaue Baby Webmasters and the University of San Jose-Recoletos Baby Jaguars.

Gabriel Gonzales led the Magis Eagles with 24 points, 12 rebounds, and a steal. Jacob Gabriel Javelosa added 12 markers while Lian Kent Basa contributed nine points, eight rebounds, three assists, and three steals.

Andre Patiño produced 17 points and Axel Joseph Oropisa had 16 markers for the Cheetahs, who dropped to 1-3.(CCM)
