STORM clouds may be gathering as June approaches, signaling the possibility of one or two tropical cyclones forming or entering the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) shared this outlook during a climate forum on Wednesday, May 28.

Weather specialist Joanne Mae Adelino explained that historical data and climate patterns show tropical cyclones in June usually follow one of four paths.

Some storms enter the PAR and approach the Philippine landmass but then curve away before making landfall, moving toward Taiwan or Japan. Others enter the PAR but recurve without making landfall, heading toward Japan, she explained in a report by Manila Bulletin.

Adelino also noted that cyclones that do make landfall often cross southern Luzon before proceeding to northern Vietnam or Hong Kong, or pass through eastern and northern parts of the Visayas before moving toward those same areas.

If one or two tropical cyclones enter the PAR next month, Pagasa will assign them local names from its 2025 list, beginning with “Auring” and “Bising.”

So far this year, no tropical cyclones have entered the PAR.(MyTVCebu)
