THE Philippine National Police through its Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG) has partnered with Chinese-owned social media platform Tiktok to work against online scams and sexual exploitation of children online.
“If someone complains of an online scam using TikTok, there is no need for a letter. There will be a focal person that the PNP-ACG can coordinate with to speed up the process,” ACG public information officer Lt. Wallen Mae Arancillo
Arancillo said TikTok received around 108 complaints of scamming activities in social media platforms, a Philippine Star report stated.
Tiktok, which is a short-form video hosting service, also allows users to sell their products online, which is why this could be an easy target by criminals.
Among other incidents that happened wherein victims get substandard products or received nothing from fake sellers even if they already paid for their purchased items.
The social media platform has also become an avenue for sexual exploitations where nude and undesirable videos were posted on Tiktok.
ACG officer-in-charge Col. Rommel Batangan said scammers use Tiktok to do fraudulent schemes since this is one of the widely used social media platforms in the country.
He said, with their collaboration, there will be an intensified investigation of unscrupulous activities that aims to deceit users.
“This collaboration with TikTok will significantly enhance and expedite our cybercrime investigation efforts, reinforcing our commitment to creating a safer and more secure cyberspace for everyone,“ Batangan said.
ACG and Tiktok had a meeting to discuss and plan out their strategies to deter these online scams.
TikTok management on its part said they are committed and willing to coordinate with Philippine authorities to combat these scammers using their service to deceit people.(LAO)
