Pastor, former American Idol contestant convicted of killing wife in Ohio

FROM singing on the American Idol stage to standing trial for murder, Caleb Flynn’s life took a dramatic turn before an Ohio jury which found him guilty of killing his wife.

Flynn, 40, a former American Idol contestant and pastor, was convicted of all nine charges after jurors deliberated for less than three hours. He was accused of shooting his wife, Ashley Flynn, twice in the back of the head while she slept at their home in Tipp City, near Dayton, in February this year.

Weeping as the verdict was read, Flynn faces life in prison without parole and is due to be sentenced on Oct. 5.

The eight-day trial featured testimony from dozens of witnesses, police body-camera footage and evidence from Flynn’s iPhone and Apple Watch. Prosecutors also presented thousands of messages exchanged between Flynn and Alleigha Botner, a former church intern with whom he had an affair.

In one August 2025 message, Flynn told Botner he had spent the night thinking about ways to kill his wife without going to prison. He also wrote that he wanted her dead and gone.

Botner testified for two days about their nearly 18-month relationship. She told jurors she now hates Flynn “because I believe that he murdered his wife”.

Prosecutor Paul Watkins argued during closing statements that Flynn’s messages demonstrated hostility towards his wife and that he feared losing custody of his daughters, his job at her family’s business and his position at the church in a divorce.

Watkins also pointed to inconsistencies in Flynn’s account of the night of the killing. Flynn initially told police he had been in his daughters’ bedroom when he heard gunfire and later found his wife dead. He also said he noticed an open garage-side door, but Watkins said Flynn later told investigators he had not been to the garage.

Defence lawyer Patrick Mulligan argued that the prosecution had no concrete evidence linking Flynn to the murder.

“Connecting a couple of meaningless dots doesn’t solve the case,” he said in a BBC report.

The firearm allegedly kept in Flynn’s truck was never recovered. Investigators found the centre console open.

Prosecutors also presented evidence that several apps, including Instagram and an AI music app, had been deleted from Flynn’s phone before Ashley’s death. Special agent Joseph Wilhelm said the music app “related to his relationship with Alleigha Botner”.

Botner also testified about an AI-generated song prosecutors said Flynn wrote and dedicated to her.

Flynn appeared on American Idol in 2013, earning a “golden ticket” to Hollywood after auditioning before Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Randy Jackson.(MyTVCebu)
