Mandaue taps multi-titled coach for Governor’s Cup caging

DETERMINED to come up with a successful campaign, Mandaue City has tapped a multi-titled coach for its campaign in the Governor’s Cup Under-18 Basketball Tournament, which will kick off on Sept. 26.

Mary Joy Tabal-Jimenez of the Mandaue City Sports Commission said the city has brought in Gary Cortes, the multi-titled bench tactician of the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers.

“When the city decided to commit to joining and asked what’s the first thing to do, my answer was to get the best coach, and I had no one in mind but coach Gary,” Tabal-Jimenez said.

Cortes has been with the Green Lancers for the past nine years.

In nine years with the team, Cortes led UV to seven championships and two first runner-up finishes in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi).

“He’s really one of the best. Aside from his accomplishments, he is from Mandaue City. His heart is for Mandaue and he’s very humble,” Tabal-Jimenez added.

The city is already in the thick of preparations to assemble a competitive team with Cortes spearheading the conduct of a series of tryouts.

Cortes will be backed by assistant coaches Allan Cabatingan and Raymon Mercader.(CCM)
