ONE big five.THOSE words were written prominently on the shirts that the Sacred Heart School–Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles wore shortly after they completed a historic run in the Cebu Schools Atheltic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Season 25 secondary basketball tournament on Friday night, Dec. 13.
The Magis Eagles soared to greater heights by sealing a rare five-peat as they took down the University of Cebu (UC) Baby Webmasters, 79-57, in Game 2 of their best-of-seven title series at the Cebu Coliseum.
The dominant 22-point win made the Magis Eagles the first team in the league to win five straight titles, sweeping the Baby Webmasters by duplicating their equally dominant 81-65 win in Game 1.
The clean sweep cemented Ateneo’s status as the league’s winningest school with its ninth title–two more than the University of the Visayas Baby Green Lancers.
Leading the Magis Eagles’ title-clinching win was Lian Kent Basa, who piled up 18 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, and a block en route to winning the Finals MVP award.
Gabriel Gonzales added 17 points and eight rebounds, Jhonrey Recio contributed 15 markers and Jacob Lacson finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Allen Doverte scored 13 points, Xerex Alejandro chipped in 11 and Jan Xander Bulagsak added 10 for the Baby Webmasters, who actually took a 40-34 lead in the second quarter.
Ateneo turned things around in the third period, staging a 25-4 attack to seize a 59-44 lead. It was all Ateneo from that point as it even led by as many as 22 points in the closing minutes.(CCM)
