Eala poised to surge to career-best in WTA rankings
BEHIND a solid showing in the Wimbledon Championships, Alex Eala is set to surge to a career-best in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings.
In the WTA live rankings, the 21-year-old Filipina tennis star moved up from No. 32 to No. 28.
Eala’s career-best stands at No. 29 which she achieved last March shortly after completing a fourth-round finish at the Indian Wells Open.
The official rankings will be released when the Grand Slam ends on the weekend.
Eala made history when she became the first Filipino to see action in the main draw of Wimbledon. Her stellar run saw her defeat world No. 3 and defending champion Iga Swiatek in the third round.
Eala couldn’t make it deeper into the tournament after she lost to world No. 17 Jasmine Pegula of Italy in the Round of 16.
Eala’s fourth-round finish is the best-ever Grand Slam result by a Filipina in the Open Era as she bettered her previous first- and second-round campaigns over the last two years.
The stint also netted Eala a whopping £300,000 (roughly P24.6 million).
From Wimbledon, Eala is expected to compete next in the Mubadala DC Open in Washington DC, United States. The WTA500 hardcourt tournament is scheduled from July 27 to Aug. 2.(CCM)
