China reaffirms partnership with Cebu as 'Philippines-China Friendship Day' held
CHINESE Consul General Zhang Zhen reaffirmed China’s commitment to strengthening ties with Cebu during the celebration of the 51st anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and the Philippines.
Speaking before government officials, business leaders, and community representatives on Tuesday evening, June 9, Zhang described Cebu as a valued partner in advancing economic cooperation, cultural exchanges, and people-to-people connections.
She emphasized the long-standing relationship between China and Cebu, noting that the friendship has continued to grow over the years.
Reflecting on her more than three years in Cebu, Zhang expressed appreciation for the hospitality and kindness of Cebuanos and Visayans, saying their warmth left a lasting impression on her.
The event marked 51 years since the Philippines and China established formal diplomatic relations on June 9, 1975.
Zhang highlighted the deep historical links between the two peoples, forged through centuries of trade, cultural interaction, and family ties.
She also acknowledged the contributions of Chinese immigrants and Filipino-Chinese communities to the country’s development.
The consul recalled the shared sacrifices of Chinese, Filipino-Chinese, and Filipino resistance fighters during World War II, describing their common struggle as a lasting symbol of friendship between the two nations.
“Fifty-one years ago, on June 9, 1975, our two countries established diplomatic relations. Through the ups and downs of bilateral ties, China has always stood in solidarity with the Filipinos, providing assistance across people-centered areas: disaster relief, epidemic supplies, agricultural development, infrastructure projects, etc.,” Zhang said.
Looking ahead, Zhang said China’s newly launched 15th Five-Year Plan presents opportunities for greater collaboration in innovation, trade, and development. She encouraged the Philippines to participate in initiatives that promote shared progress and economic cooperation.
She likewise expressed support for Cebu Province’s participation in the 2026 China-ASEAN Expo as the Philippines’ designated “Province of Charm,” describing Cebu and Metro Cebu as among the country’s most dynamic and attractive destinations.
Zhang concluded by calling on leaders and stakeholders from both countries to continue fostering friendship, cooperation, and shared prosperity in the years ahead.(MyTVCebu)
