CESAFI BASKETBALL: UC surges to 2-0; San Carlos gets 1st win

THE University of Cebu (UC)-Main Webmasters made it two wins in a row while the San Carlos School of Cebu (SCSC) Baby Warriors broke into the win column in the basketball tournament of the CESAFI Season 26 on Thursday night, Sept. 10, at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Webmasters drubbed the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors, 81-63, in the college division, scoring another dominant win after starting the season with an 81-47 thumping of the sister-team UC-Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue.

UC Main, thus, tied the Benedicto College Cheetahs and the Cebu Institute of Technology-University Wildcats atop the standings with identical 2-0 (win-loss) records.

UC was led by Ricofer Sordilla, who erupted for 23 points on a hot 4-of-6 shooting from three-point area. Luther Gabriel Leonard was also productive as he collected 17 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, and a block. Maverick Angelo Eligoyo was the third Webmaster in double figures with 16 markers.

Jhoernel Tangkay and James Paolo Gica combined for 33 points to lead USC, which faltered starting the season with an impressive 81-68 beating of the four-time defending champions University of the Visayas Green Lancers.

On the other hand, the Baby Warriors overcame an early double-digit deficit and edged out the Don Bosco Technical College (DBTC) Greywolves, 65-64, in the secondary division.

SCSC was coming off a 64-75 defeat to the Cebu Eastern College Blue Dragons and for a while, it looked like it was heading to another defeat when it allowed Don Bosco to post leads of as many as 11 points.

SCSC managed to recover and build a 10-point cushion before surviving a frenetic ending to salvage their first win of the season.

Heath Lauren Macapil carried the Baby Warriors with a double-double finish of 13 points and 10 rebounds to go with three assists and two steals.

Lance Luther Aballe also scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds while Ahron Andrei Casul chipped in 10 markers.

Apart from Macapil, two other Baby Warriors collared at least 10 boards.

Keen Kangleon hauled down 14 rebounds while scoring seven points. Alfredo Zafra III gobbled up 10 boards that went with three points, seven assists, five steals, and two blocks.

Zane Ondoy scored 14 points, Antonio Joseph Issifu racked up 13 markers and Christian Lambayan chalked up 11 points but the Greywolves stumbled to their second defeat in three matches.(CCM)
