PROMISING pug Jay Bryan Baricuatro came up short in his bid to win the gold after losing to hometown bet Sanzhar Tashkenbay in the men’s 50kg final of the 2025 World Boxing Cup in Astana, Kazakhstan, on Sunday, July 6.

Baricuatro, a native of Talisay City, Cebu, was simply outworked by Tashkenbay, whose aggressiveness enabled him to dictate the tempo of the fight.

When the final bell rang, Tashkenbay celebrated with a lopsided win as all five judges scored the bout 30-27, sealing the Kazakh fighter’s unanimous decision victory, 5-0.

Despite the championship loss, it was still an impressive run for Baricuatro.

Baricuatro started his campaign with a win over Italy’s Salvatore Attrattivo in the opening round. He thendfeated India’s Jadumani Singh Mandengbam in the quarterfinals before securing a championship seat by dominating Australia’s Omer Izas in the semis.

The tournament was participated in by more than 400 boxers from 31 countries.

Among the countries that took part in the competition that featured 28 categories with men’s and women’s divisions were Australia, Azerbaijan, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chinese Taipei, Colombia, Croatia, Dominican Republic, England, Finland, France, Germany, India, Iran, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, South Korea, the Kyrgyz Republic, Mongolia, Nigeria, Norway, Philippines, Poland, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland, Türkiye, the United States, and Uzbekistan.(CCM)
