KNOWN for their powerhouse athletic team, the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters are expected to soar even higher following the opening of a new sports facility.
The Webmasters on Thursday, July 10, inaugurated their P2-million gymnastics training center at the UC Main Campus in downtown Cebu City, marking a major step in the university’s bid to develop topnotch athletes.
UC athletic director Jessica Honoridez said the construction of the facility was fully funded by UC president Atty. Augusto W. Go, whose granddaughters train under gymnast coach Darlene Dela Pisa.
Dela Pisa, mother of 2019 Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Daniela Reggie Dela Pisa, is overseeing the gymnastics center.
“Atty. Go even suggested adding more equipment. Once we finish setting up the remaining areas, we’ll start bringing in more gear. He’s been very supportive, especially since his granddaughter is enrolled in our program. In fact, they personally selected the equipment when they bought them in China,” Honoridez said.
The training center is equipped with standard gymnastics equipment, including a full-sized mat, rings, uneven bars, vault, pommel horse, parallel bars, springboard, high bar, and balance beam, among others.
The facility will not only benefit UC athletes but also the entire Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVIRAA), Honoridez said.
“I want our gymnasts to excel in the Cebu City Olympics, CVIRAA, and especially in the Palarong Pambansa. As you’ve seen, Central Visayas hasn’t performed well in recent Palaro editions, and a big part of that is the lack of proper equipment,” said Honoridez.(CCM)
