THE United States’ mass deportation campaign under President Donald Trump’s administration is now causing major disruptions in several local economies.
According to reports from U.S. business groups and policy institutes, Trump’s intensified deportation drive — targeting undocumented immigrants — has already led to labor shortages in construction, farming, hospitality, and food production.
Economists say that without immigrant labor, many small and medium-sized businesses are struggling to stay open.
Farms are reportedly leaving crops unharvested, restaurants are cutting operating hours, and builders are delaying housing projects due to lack of manpower. “It’s killing business,” one U.S. farm cooperative told CNN, adding that rising wages and worker scarcity are pushing up prices for consumers.
A recent analysis by the Joint Economic Committee of the U.S. Congress projects that deporting millions of undocumented workers could shrink the American economy by up to 7% in five years, resulting in job losses and higher prices.(Victoria Diana, USJ-R Comm Intern)
